The aim of Re-Livestock is to evaluate and mobilize the adoption of innovative practices applied cross scale (animal, herd, farm, sector and region) to reduce Greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) of livestock farming systems. Re-Livestock follows a holistic approach to reduce GHG by combining practices from animal nutrition, breeding and management and housing in novel Life Cycle Analyses (LCA) models. Specific objectives of Re-Livestock in animal breeding are (1) to demonstrate the potential of animal breeding in climate change mitigation and adaptation by defining the best traits for cattle and pigs, (2) to improve the accuracy and predictive ability of estimated breeding values for traits related to mitigation and adaptation by forming a large data pool across countries, and (3) to design breeding strategies that reduce GHG emissions. Participating partners of Breed4Food are CRV and Wageningen University & Research.
