Commencing on 1 October 2016, Erwin Koenen has been appointed director of Breed4Food. Koenen succeeds Bernard de Geus, who has been in charge of the research consortium since June 2013.
Erwin Koenen studied at Wageningen University and graduated in breeding research. He has worked at cattle improvement organisation CRV since 1999 in positions including researcher and Head of Research. One of his specialist fields is organising cooperative projects with and between scientific institutes and the business sector.
Research and innovation
Koenen: ‘Genetics are at the foundation of healthy food, animal welfare and a profitable income for farmers. The Dutch companies and institutes active in animal breeding are booking immense progress in this area. I am looking forward to being at the forefront of the scientific collaboration between these parties’ contributing to innovations in the breeding sector.
The board of Breed4Food would like to thank Bernard de Geus for his leadership during the first years of Breed4Food, in which the consortium has established a distinct position. Numerous successful research projects have been initiated and, among other accomplishments, Breed4Food has also entered into a partnership with Technology Foundation STW. One form of this collaboration is fundamental research into more effective application of genetic information in predicting animal traits.
Ready for a new phase
Breed4Food is currently preparing the next phase 2017-2021, when the focus will be on developing and widespread utilisation of tools, methods and techniques aimed at improving the sustainability, health, efficiency and welfare of animals in the breeding sector. The board of Breed4Food wishes Erwin Koenen every success in this fine challenge.
